Dog meat trade in the Philippines

Successful Rescue Operation Against Philippine Dog Meat Trade

In a joint operation with the Philippine National Police (PNP), AWIP International successfully intercepted a significant case of the dog meat trade in the Philippines. This operation, conducted on 25 October, led to the rescue of three female Philippine Native Dogs and the arrest of a well-known dog meat trader.

AWIP International, in collaboration with national authorities, acted on intelligence and carefully mapped out the area to intercept the suspected dog trader en route. The suspect, transporting three dogs with their snouts bound in wire and hidden in sacks, was apprehended and taken into custody. The rescued dogs are now receiving veterinary care and will be transferred to a safe shelter once they have fully recovered.

Jacob Lloyd, Executive Director of the Animal Welfare Investigations Project, praised the operation’s success, stating, “This rescue represents a meaningful step forward in the fight against the illegal dog meat trade. Our dedicated team’s work alongside the Philippine National Police sends a clear message that such cruelty will not be tolerated.”

The arrested individual faces charges under Republic Act 8485, also known as the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, reinforcing the Philippine government’s commitment to tackling animal cruelty.

This successful operation highlights the impact of proactive measures and collaboration in combating animal abuse and illegal trade practices, reflecting AWIP International’s ongoing mission to protect vulnerable animals worldwide.
