Investigators from the Animal Welfare Investigations Project (AWIP) worked alongside the Philippine National Police (PNP) during an intelligence-led operation targeting the illegal dog meat trade in Pangasinan, Philippines.
During the operation, officers and investigators located a young dog inside a canvas sack at a roadside slaughter site. The dog’s muzzle had been tightly bound and, in extreme heat and humidity, the animal was exhibiting clear signs of respiratory distress. Veterinary assessment indicates the dog is approximately one year old. He has since been named Theo.
Theo was removed alive from the scene and transported immediately to emergency veterinary care. He is currently receiving treatment for dehydration, shock, and trauma.
A 71-year-old male suspected dog meat trader was arrested in connection with the operation. AWIP investigators are now preparing a criminal complaint in relation to offences under the Animal Welfare Act.
“Theo was minutes away from death. The conditions we encountered show the brutality of the dog meat trade and the complete disregard for animal welfare. Thanks to rapid joint action with the Philippine National Police, Theo is alive today and receiving the care he desperately needed. We will continue to investigate, disrupt, protect and rescue until those responsible for this cruelty are held fully accountable.”
– Jacob Lloyd, CEO, Animal Welfare Investigations Project
AWIP continues to work in close partnership with the Philippine National Police to combat organised animal cruelty and bring offenders before the courts. Members of the public with information relating to illegal dog meat trade activity are encouraged to report it to the authorities.
