A joint intelligence-led operation by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Animal Welfare Investigations Project (AWIP) has resulted in the interception of a dog carcass being transported for illegal sale, and the arrest of a 38-year-old suspect believed to be involved in the dog meat trade.
The operation, carried out in Pangasinan, forms part of AWIP’s wider efforts to dismantle organised dog meat trafficking networks across the Philippines. Evidence gathered by AWIP’s regional investigators guided officers to the suspect, resulting in the successful interception before the carcass reached its intended buyers.
The dog meat trade continues to inflict immense suffering on stolen pets and vulnerable strays. In many cases, dogs are brutally killed and trafficked for profit by individuals operating within loose but persistent networks. This arrest highlights both the organised nature of the activity and the growing pressure being placed on traders as enforcement intensifies.
“What we’re seeing across the Philippines is a clear shift. The dog meat trade is shrinking under sustained pressure. Each arrest, each interception, sends a message that this cruelty is no longer being ignored. The work is far from over, but the landscape is changing and it’s changing because targeted, intelligence-led enforcement is finally hitting the people responsible.”
– Jacob Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Animal Welfare Investigations Project
AWIP commends the swift and decisive response of the Philippine National Police. Working together, AWIP and the PNP continue to build intelligence, pursue offenders, and disrupt the networks responsible for this illegal trade. Further inquiries into the suspect’s wider connections are ongoing as efforts to dismantle the trade continue.
