As the executive director of AWIP, I’m always focused on making our investigations as impactful as possible. That’s why, when I attend conferences like The Animal Law Conference in Portland or OSMOSISCon in Las Vegas, I’m not just there to learn—I’m there to bring back strategies, tools, and connections that will directly benefit our team on the ground.
Feeding Knowledge Back to Our Frontline Teams
One of my top priorities after each conference is sharing new insights with our frontline investigators. The work they do is challenging and high-stakes, so equipping them with the latest techniques is essential. For example, at OSMOSISCon, I attended sessions on advanced open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools. Afterward, I met with our frontline investigators to discuss how these techniques can be applied to our current cases. This collaboration helps us operate more efficiently and, ultimately, bring justice for animals.
Our frontline investigators are the backbone of AWIP’s mission. They’re out there conducting undercover investigations, gathering evidence, and working closely with law enforcement. By feeding the latest investigative techniques and legal knowledge directly to them, we can make sure they’re always equipped to handle the complexities of their work with precision and confidence.
Strengthening Operations with Real-World Connections
The relationships we build at these conferences don’t just stay on paper—they become valuable resources that our frontline investigators can call upon. After connecting with experts at The Animal Law Conference, we now have a network of law enforcement contacts and animal law professionals who are ready to support AWIP’s investigations. These connections have already been beneficial in an upcoming operation targeting wildlife trafficking in Africa, where we will be providing direct assistance on the ground.
